Installation of the Bell Presented Unique Challenges

This was one of those - doing it for the first time and probably the one time - kind of projects! To mount the bell in the front entrance awning required manufacturing the framework to hold and hang the ball securely yet allow it to swing when rung - and the hole in the awning ceiling only gave room for one person to crawl up inside...so we can be thankful for the creativity of these two workers!

At long last, we can show a before and after of the original hole that started this whole amazing and very long story!

It is just great to look up
and see the new roof, and new gutters and downspouts -
Praise the Lord!

This is an entrance on the west wall - sporting new siding, new roof and new gutters and downspouts - and just in time for our first big winter storm of 4 + inches of rain in two days, plus some pretty stiff winds - a good test of our renewed building!

Balcony carpeted for the first time!

A lot of the original carpet in the sanctuary is still in great shape, so the balcony, part of the stairs and a couple other stairways have been or will be carpeted. It was rather exciting to watch the men move the all-wood pews from the downstairs area where we have met for church services since last January, up into the sanctuary and then the balcony...

The new sanctuary chairs arrived

We will have a choice of sitting in the pews or the chairs in the sanctuary - a row of the long pews will be in the center, then rows of chairs on either side of the pews. When you stand up and start to visit with someone, there will still be room in the aisles for people to move around!

Somehow this process looked different than the steeple placements on the old seed barn church, and on the sanctuary many years ago!

With five new windows, some interior reinforcing blocks, new siding and improved door/awnings - it's looking great!

The south wall inside the library was really in rough shape - then the chimney was removed, and that section of the wall was rebuilt.

Step by step - sheet rock is in, tape and "mud" is applied.

It is especially nice to see the corner that was the original hole, all repaired and looking great!

The electrician has been busy with many projects - including re-installing the sanctuary lighting. He has a nice lift to get him up high enough to re-install the lights.

The pile of roofing materials is getting smaller! Yeah!

Inside the sanctuary - glad it was someone else with the job of hanging the sheetrock up around the stained glass window!

It is hard to know where to park and which door to use these days. It is encouraging to see the roof ridgeline cap has been installed on the sanctuary roof, and the rest of the roof over the church offices and classrooms is being installed now.

This week we have the plumbers, electrician, sheet rock guys and the roofers all working at the same time! Today I have an "up-close and personal" view of the roof debris just outside my office window.

There is new sheet rock in the kitchen, library, downstairs bathrooms and most of the fellowship hall!

Next to watching the hole in the roof being repaired this week, seeing the first pieces of the new metal roofing being nailed into place - feels "momentous" - after all the months of waiting - remembering the first views of driving up to the church right after the storm. Yes, there is still much work to be done, but this stage is encouraging.

The roof replacement process has begun and what a process! Here are a few pictures from the inside, showing the sunshine coming into the sanctuary as they are putting in the new "ridge line."

The new siding on the south wall has been started...if you click on the picture with the two workers, you will see more clearly that they are carefully measuring, using the level and another "gadget" to place the siding correctly.

More "remove and replace"

The old cedar shakes between the first and second floor windows on the "front" of the church (classroom/playroom areas) have been replaced with the new "hardy plank" pieces to match the north wall around the stained glass window. Also, the peak of the awning over the front doors has new "hardy plank" siding.

Next steps in the "ex-Fireside" room

In addition to the replacement of the wall dividing the fireside room from the sanctuary, there will be two doorways added, so that the room can be closed (to keep the heat from going up into the balcony) and it will be more "sound - proof."

This view is looking from the room towards the stairs going up to the balcony - one of the two new doorways. The new doors will be solid, not "hollow-core."

There are new floor boards and a TON of new nails in the flooring of the sanctuary and balcony.

The siding has been completed on the north wall! As the workmen reached the round stained glass window, they had to carefully measure for each piece, call down to the man at the saw, who then cut the piece and brought it up the ladder to their lift - slow, tedious - but it looks great!

Cutting the square into two triangles...

This triangle shaped block is what has been installed around the perimeter of the sanctuary where the roof meets the wall. Then metal strips are added to tie it in with the boards - when the roof is replaced, they will also nail in from above. (I'm not sure why this text is underlined - if someone has an idea about it, please let me know (Ellen).)

This brace is being installed along the bottom of the wall in the fellowship hall where our missionary bulletin boards used to be.

Bracing is being installed in several places - the large brace with two bolts - are now installed from the east corner of the kitchen, all along the wall to the stairs that lead up to the baptistry.

The North Wall Repairs

In some of the sanctuary pictures, you see a section of sheet rock cut from below the stained glass window - this helped the inspectors and engineers to see that the wall needed to be rebuilt for increased stability - It was interesting to watch as the sheet rock was removed, the outside siding and plywood was removed, the stained glass window was removed and then the whole wall, working from the left and right sides towards the center - they fixed it!

Sanctuary floor - beam repairs

This week it has been very interesting to watch the next steps of - moving the pews all to one side of the room, pulling the carpet up in one big piece, rolling it to one side, then prying up the flooring so that they could finish nailing the blocks that had been installed from below, in the ceiling of the fellowship hall. Then they rolled the carpet back down, moved the pews to the other side, and did more work. The workers also added LOTS OF NAILS to the flooring.

Here is a series of pictures, starting with that first day after the storm. Giant pieces of plastic laid over the pews, which were pushed together.

Some work was done - notice the sheet rock removed from under the stained glass window, during inspections by engineers to evaluate the inner construction of the walls.

Progress Report - Fellowship Hall

Although the Fellowship Hall was not damaged by the storm, it is undergoing some changes due to building code requirements.

The first picture shows the result of taking everything out of the church kitchen (a previous workday project) and sorting - garbage, Goodwill, keep it - thank you ladies, this was a big job to empty every cupboard and drawer in the kitchen!
We eagerly await the day when these items will be put away in our new kitchen!

There are two new "short" walls at the end of the room we used for adult Sunday School class.

One wall has had the sheet rock removed and blocks have been installed as a part of the "shear" wall
The ceiling tiles have been taken down so that the workmen could install blocks as well.
Our stuff has traveled around the room, and now is under black plastic along the wall.

The south wall - it took almost two weeks to remove the chimney and fireplace, and rebuild the wall. I watched as the workman was removing some studs from the wall of the library - because of chronic leaking, the lower 12 inches of the studs had rotted away!

First days after the storm

Pictures taken the day after the storm - the bus barn in piles, ribbons of roof metal everywhere, a new view of the neighborhood through the hole in the roof. Since we didn't know what the weather was going to do next, or how or when things would be repaired - there were people helping to pick up the metal roofing, moving the pews together and covering them with GIANT pieces of plastic, moving all the libary books, videos and other items into the playroom...

There were special tools in the bus barn that belonged to the Leamys, and in all that disarray, the Schultz boys found the tools!

BUILDING REPAIR UPDATE - 7/11/08

The chimney and fireplace have been removed.
The repairs to the north and south walls are complete.
Sheer walls have been put in place in the north and south ends of the Fellowship Hall.
Blocking is being added to all of the sanctuary perimeter walls.
Pending projects include:

Adding blocking between the top plate and the roof so that a positive connection can be made and the roof can be secured to the top plate.
Installing the ridge beam inside the sanctuary at the peak of the ceiling.
Removal of additional siding.
Install blocking in the sanctuary floor system.
